Drunken, Cocaine-Fueled Long Island Crash Killed Bicyclist, Driver Indicted: DA

Wilfredo Blanco Molina, 41, of Hicksville, was indicted on charges including aggravated vehicular homicide, vehicular manslaughter, and leaving the scene of a fatal crash, Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly said.

Molina had a blood alcohol content of .22—more than twice the legal limit—when he plowed into 69-year-old Robert McCarthy on Old Country Road near State Street around 3:40 a.m. on Oct. 27, 2024, authorities said.

McCarthy, who was wearing a reflective vest and had lights on his bike, was thrown into a telephone pole and died instantly. Molina allegedly fled eastbound for about a quarter of a mile before his car broke down due to a flat tire.

When officers approached, they found blood smeared across the car’s fender, a crushed passenger-side headlight and mirror, and Molina allegedly reeking of alcohol. A search of his pockets reportedly turned up cocaine, investigators said.

“This defendant, allegedly more than twice the legal limit for alcohol and impaired by cocaine, never saw Robert,” Donnelly said. “Rather than stop and call for help, this defendant allegedly continued to drive away from the crash until a flat tire prevented him from going any further.”

Molina had reportedly been drinking at a bar for hours before the crash.

If convicted, he faces up to 32 years in prison. He pleaded not guilty, and bail was set at $10,000 cash, $50,000 bond, or $250,000 partially secured bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 9.
